The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers
degrees in chemistry at the B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D.
levels. We are a growing program with 23 faculty and approximately 80
graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the
major disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic,
and physical chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry
faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary
scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry
of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.
Applications to the Graduate
Program are now being accepted. For application information
or to arrange a visit to our department contact the
. Also feel free to contact the graduate
ambassadors for chemistry.
GAANN Fellowships: The Department has been awarded a GAANN grant to fund fellowships for graduate students. The fellowships provide stipends up to $30K. More information can be found at the GAANN fellowship page.
Alumni,
we want to hear from you. We are trying
to collect info on our B.S.
and graduate alumni.
Congratulations to Dr. Arun Gupta and Dr. Robin Rogers who have been elected to the rank of AAAS Fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Election as an AAAS Fellow isa highly prestigious honor recognizing distinguished efforts in the advancement of science.
Chemistry major John Canada has been chosen to attend the United Nations Climate-Change Conference in Durban, South Africa. John is an undergraduate research student with Dr. Robin Rogers. John was one of five US students chosen by the American Chemical Society to attend this conference. You can follow John at the conference on the student perspective blog. UA Press Release
Graduate student Parker McCrary has recieved a Ciba Travel Award in Green Chemistry. Parker was one of four winners nationally. The funds will support his travel to the National ACS Meeting in San Diego. Parker is a member of Dr. Robin Rogers's research groupo.
Dr. Thomas Vaid's synthesis of the first all organic porphyrin
molecule, which contains an ethylene unit, rather than a metal,
was highlighted in Chemical & Engineering
News. The novel compound has potential applications in solar
energy collection. See the original paper in the Journal
of the American Chemical Society.
The department is pleased to welcome its new class of graduate
students.
Congratulations to the students who received degrees at the combined
May/August commencement ceremony.
A paper entitled, "Characterization of the Organic Component of
Low-Molecular-Weight Chromium-Binding Substance and Its Binding
of Chromium," by Dr.
John Vincent and Dr.
Carolyn Cassady was
chosen as an Editor's
Pick by the Journal of Nutrition, the flagship
journal of the American Society of Nutrition.
Congratulations to MIngyang Chen and Michele Stover who shared 3rd place in the poster competition at the SETCA conference. Both MIngyang and Michele work with Dr. David Dixon.
Students who were taking courses in chemistry should read the Dean's memo regarding the procedure for assigning grades for the spring 2011 semester. Students who want to petition to take the deferred final can do so by completing this form. Please be patients as instructors compile and submit their grades. Your instructor should be providing additional information in the near future.
Our thoughts go out to everyone in Tuscaloosa who was impacted
by the tornado yesterday. While Shelby Hall and the rest of the
UA campus was unharmed, we know that several members of the UA
community were affected by this storm. For updates on UA operations,

Dr. David Dixon will
receive the Burnum Distinguished Faculty award. The Burnam award
is presented annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated
superior scholarly or artistic achievements and profound dedication
to the art of teaching. Dr. Dixon will receive the award and give
an address on Tuesday, April 12th at 4:30 PM at the Child Development
Center. The award address is open to the public. UA
